Artist’s Mind/Studio/World
Collaborating with artists who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of their mediums makes us tick. Such is the case with world-renowned artisan Viola Frey whose vision and five-decade career was deftly focused on exploring and elevating the ethos of ceramic sculpture until her passing in 2004. Today, however, her singular point-of-view and impressive body of work – which also includes painting, drawing, photography, bronze and glass – continues to thrive and thrill with its colorful visual language that's celebrated by collectors, galleries and museums, amplified by the Artists’ Legacy Foundation she co-founded in 2000 with Squeak Carnwath and Gary Knecht, and now honored by Flavor Paper with the introduction of her Artist’s Mind/Studio/World wallpaper.
Featuring a treasure trove of personal and culturally significant iconography often found in Frey's work – from Buddhas, Western figurines and aspects of daily life such as men in business suits, women in floral dresses or in the nude, to trinkets and collectibles in a bricolage style, and even her own profile – Artist’s Mind takes the viewer on a journey through her artistic process, philosophy, and approach. It’s a delightfully complex expression of her life and of the influences along the way that’s powerful, dynamic, and a must experience. While Frey used 24 screens to screenprint the design on paper-backed cotton sateen for her 1992 Artists-in-Residence exhibition at The Fabric Workshop and Museum, our fresh take is digitally produced and offered on (among other materials) an iridescent fabric wallpaper that resembles silk as a nod to her originality…and to maintain the integrity of the work while making it approachable for everyone and any application. We hope Frey would be proud!
P.S. Artist’s Mind is available with and without a border – yes, borders are back, people! – that boasts even more objets Frey employs to illustrate a sense of interconnectedness in her work. Take a peek at the maquette, which spotlights the Flavor fringe alongside Frey's fabulous life-sized sculpture "Man Balancing Urn." If you're down with the decoration but would like to explore placement options other than the bottom, please give us a call to discuss the possibilities.
